Why women need to lift weights

The amount of women now lifting weights has increased significantly over the last couple of years and you may be wondering why. It’s common for women to think by lifting weights they will end up looking masculine, this is untrue! It’s very difficult for us women to grow that amount of muscle naturally, however there are some massive benefits I wanted to highlight if you are thinking about getting into weight training.

  • It will help you to become lean NOT bulky. By increasing lean muscle mass you will actually burn more calories at rest because your muscles need the extra energy from food to repair and grow. Just make sure you are eating an adequate amount of protein, carbohydrates and fats - don't leave out one food group, eat a balance of all three!

  • Weight training has been known to help you get a better nights sleep! Who wouldn't want that? Studies have shown that weight training affects the overall quality of sleep and helps you settle down to a longer sleep.

  • Lifting weights gives you a huge boost and sense of self empowerment! Not only because you're doing things you never thought you could do, but also because you will be stronger in every day tasks.

  • If you're looking to change the shape of your body e.g. toned legs, bigger bum, defined stomach then weights is definitely for you! Although cardio has its place for calorie burning and general cardiovascular health, weights will actually change your body shape because you are using and shaping your muscles. Cardio won’t “tone” your body alone.

  • Your bone density and tendons will become much stronger, which helps to reduces the risk of injury and osteoporosis.

If you’re still in doubt, give the weights a try for a few weeks and see your results!
