Non food reasons you may be bloated

Bloating is extremely common, but it can be due to a number of things which may not be food related. If you think it is food related it may be worth keeping a food diary and noting down when you feel bloated so you can see what could be causing it.

Here are some non food reasons you may be bloated

  1. Fluid retention

This is pretty common especially among women, it usually occurs round the abdomen and pelvis areas. You can retain fluid from eating too much salt or sitting on a airplane. Most of the time its temporary and nothing to worry about but if it doesn't go away after a few days then go and see the Dr.

2. Dehydration

A lack of water can cause you to bloat which may seem weird but it does. Dehydration comes with electrolyte imbalances, which can stop digestion and make it harder for your body to keep regular water levels.

3. Digestive disorder

IBS, celiac, leaky gut and all digestive disorders and cause bloating, these are more permanent issues and will need to be dealt with through your GP.

4. Infection/illness

Infections and illness cause inflammation within the body due a rise in white blood cell count. This can be made worse by taking drugs (paracetamol, ibuprofen) which often react badly with our guts

5. Constipation

Sometimes you’re bloated because you just need to go. Make sure you are eating enough fibre and again drinking enough water

6. Hormonal changes

When it’s the time of the month it can come with hormonal changes which cause bloating due to fluid retention. This is temporary and should go away in 3-7 days.
